Selfishness

You may think the word is not a good one.  That it describes someone who thinks of no one else, ever.  Self-centered.  Not a pleasant person with whom to spend time.  But…in reality?  I think in some cases, we need to re-define the way we think about this word.  We need to be selfish sometimes.  Necessary when you’re a passenger on an airplane, for example.  What are you instructed to do if the oxygen masks were to come down?  Immediately help the child near you?  Or the grandma beside you?  No.  Put the oxygen mask on yourself, first.  Only then are you more likely to be able to help those around you.
Have you ever met someone who works two jobs, to make “ends meet?”  I know an extremely nice person who works three!  I believe there are many more, doing exactly that.  Why do I bring up a busy lifestyle?  We need rest.  Sometimes we have to think of ourselves, first.  We need nourishment.  Can we go too long without food?  Of course not.  When we’re thirsty, we need a drink.  Sometimes we need to be selfish.
We all know what it’s like to help someone.  What an amazing feeling it is to give of yourself to brighten the day of another.  Time, wisdom, resources, information, a smile…and countless other ways we can give to someone in need.

What we need to remember?  If the pitcher keeps pouring, it will become empty.  Once it’s empty?  Impossible to quench thirst.  If we don’t  continually pour into ourselves, how can we expect to help others?  What additional value can we pour into their lives, if we have depleted our own supply?  Personal development is absolutely necessary, y’all.  It’s the oxygen to the person who wants to grow.  The person who’s investing in themselves to be more, learn more, do more, give more.  Pour into you, first.  Then-imagine what we could do together, to change the world!
